At first glance, it may not be obvious that greases play a vital role in lubricating all kinds of vehicle components. In a standard car, for example, more than 30 parts are lubricated with a grease. As well as providing much-needed protection and performance enhancement, greases are also a key contributor to optimising operations.

The difference between grease and oil lubricants

Unlike oils, which flow freely, greases have a thickened oil base combined with additives. This unique composition allows greases to adhere to surfaces, forming a protective layer that reduces friction and wear. In commercial vehicles, for example, where heavy loads and demanding conditions are the norm, greases act as a barrier against metal-to-metal contact – preventing premature failure and extending component life.

Grease properties

Since not all greases are created equal, the properties of greases can vary significantly. Understanding the properties of greases, such as base oil viscosity, thickener type, and additive content, is crucial when it comes to selecting the right grease for vehicles and equipment. In Europe, greases undergo rigorous classification based on DIN, ISO, and other relevant standards, with a significant emphasis on OEM specifications guiding the formulation of many greases.

One key property to consider is consistency, often measured using the NLGI (National Lubricating Grease Institute) consistency scale. Greases range from soft to hard consistency, with each type suited for specific applications. For instance, softer greases are ideal for low-temperature environments or high-speed applications, whereas harder greases offer better stability under high loads and temperatures.

Additives, for example, play a pivotal role in enhancing grease performance. Additives such as antioxidants, anti-wear agents, and corrosion inhibitors help greases meet the unique demands of commercial vehicles. Whether it's protecting against rust and oxidation or improving load-carrying capacity, the right additives can significantly enhance grease effectiveness.

Effective greases from Texaco

For operators seeking an effective grease for their application, look no further than Texaco’s wide-ranging catalogue of products. Texaco’s family of greases are formulated with properties that meet the specific needs of vehicles and equipment in every sector to help keep components running smoothly. For instance, the range includes a proven performance multi-purpose lithium grease, Multifak T EP 2 which has been formulated with a semi-synthetic base. The semi-synthetic base has a high viscosity, which helps to improve adhesion and water stability. In addition, the product also contributes to extreme pressure protection.

There’s also a high-performance, heavy-duty lithium complex grease, Delo grease EP 2, which has been designed to offer mechanical stability and adhesion in high load situations where vibration is coupled with elevated temperatures. In particular, this product promotes protection in a range of wet or corrosive environments, and offers good oxidation stability.
